The short answer
Pick the option that fits the trip
Take the full Indian Pacific when crossing Australia from one ocean-side city to the other is the main event. Take a shorter sector when Adelaide or a city stay matters more. Compare both directions on Journey Beyond’s current itinerary before choosing a cabin or onward flight.
Best fit
- Choose the full Sydney–Perth crossing when the east–west passage across Australia is the trip itself.
- Choose a shorter sector only when Adelaide or another endpoint has a real place in your itinerary.
- Compare the Indian Pacific with The Ghan when you want a hosted rail holiday but have not yet chosen between an east–west and north–south crossing.
Think twice if
- Do not book it as a quick Sydney–Perth transfer; the onboard time, inclusions and off-train program are the reason to choose it.
- Do not assume the two directions have identical duration, stops or arrival arrangements.
Key trade-offs
- The full crossing delivers a coherent coast-to-coast experience; a shorter sector leaves more time for the cities at either end.
- Direction can alter the off-train program and arrival plan, so it is an itinerary choice rather than a seat preference.
- An inclusive rail holiday should be compared with its meals, cabin and excursions, not only with a flight fare.
- Checked luggage cannot be accessed throughout the journey; cabin packing matters more than the headline allowance.
Common mistakes
- Assuming the eastbound trip is just the westbound schedule reversed.
- Selecting a cabin before checking which off-train experiences are included on the chosen departure.
- Planning a tight onward flight from an assumed city-centre arrival point.
- Checking a suitcase without keeping everything needed during the journey in the cabin.
Decision matrix
Choose the journey, then the cabin
This comparison intentionally avoids a numeric score. The useful answer depends on itinerary fit, not a universal ranking.
| Decision | Full westbound crossing | Full eastbound crossing | Shorter sector |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Sydney-to-Perth Life List objective. | Perth-to-Sydney Life List objective. | A city-based itinerary with limited rail time. |
| Planning focus | How the rail holiday ends in Perth. | How the rail holiday ends in Sydney. | Where the rail portion starts and finishes. |
| Off-train program | Check the westbound itinerary. | Check the eastbound itinerary. | Check what remains on the booked sector. |
| Main trade-off | Largest east–west commitment. | Largest east–west commitment. | Less coast-to-coast narrative. |
Decision 01
First decide if the crossing is the destination
The Indian Pacific runs between Sydney and Perth via Adelaide. Its appeal is seeing Australia change from a major eastern city through inland country to the west, with a hosted rail-holiday rhythm rather than a conventional intercity train timetable.
If you mainly need to reach Perth or Sydney quickly, compare air travel separately. The rail fare makes sense only if the onboard time, cabin, meals and off-train experiences are things you actually want.
Decision 02
Direction is more than reversing the map
Journey Beyond publishes separate itineraries for the two directions. Off-train experiences, total travel time and the final arrival plan can differ. The right direction is the one that fits the city stay you want at the end and the stops on your chosen departure.
Read the current itinerary before booking hotels. In particular, do not infer the final station or any onward transfer from the words “arrive Sydney” or “arrive Perth” alone; use the operator terminal information and your booking documents.
Decision 03
A partial journey is a different trip
The operator also markets sectors involving Adelaide. A shorter sector can be an excellent fit when you have a deliberate Adelaide stay, but it should not be described as having completed the entire coast-to-coast crossing.
Compare the exact inclusions and off-train program on the sector you select. A stop shown on a full-route brochure may not be part of a shorter booking.
Decision 04
Compare with The Ghan honestly
Both are hosted Journey Beyond rail holidays, but they answer different geography questions. The Indian Pacific crosses Australia east to west; The Ghan connects Adelaide with the tropical north through the Red Centre.
Choose based on the surrounding itinerary first: Sydney and Perth, or Adelaide and Darwin. Only then compare current departure dates, cabins and off-train experiences on the operator’s pages. Neither is universally “better.”
Decision 05
Pack for days aboard, not for the maximum allowance
Journey Beyond separates cabin luggage from checked luggage, and checked bags are not available during the train journey. Put medication, documents, chargers, suitable layers and anything needed for off-train activities in the bag that stays with you.
Cabin dimensions and luggage allowances depend on the service level. Check the current packing guidance for your booking rather than relying on a number copied into a static guide.

A sensible planning sequence
- Choose whether Sydney, Adelaide and Perth are destinations in their own right, then compare the full crossing with the sectors the operator offers for your travel date.
- Check the operator itinerary in each direction, the exact terminal and the current cabin inclusions before purchasing flights or hotels.
- Leave a buffer at the final city and keep medication, documents and overnight essentials in the bag that stays in your cabin.
